Note: I will be returning Essay #1 at the end of class on Tuesday, 2/18. I apologize for the delay. I consulted with the department manager about the Student Privacy Policy (http://catalog.wwu.edu/content.php?catoid=6&navoid=599) and I don't want to risk violating the policy by leaving the papers outside of my office. Thanks for your patience!
Rousseau Questions
1.
How
do the differentiation of families, the establishment of property, and the
development of the arts come about and change savage man? p. 396-7
2.
According
to Rousseau, how do progress and the acquisition of knowledge affect our
morals?
Read and review, p. 399-401
3.
According
to Rousseau, the "rich, pressed by necessity, finally conceive the most
thought-out project that ever entered the human mind." p. 402. What was
this "project"? Why does Rousseau think that it "irretrievably
destroyed natural liberty" and "established forever the law of
property and of inequality"? Do you agree?
4.
Is
there anything in Rousseau's imagined perfect birthplace, described at the
beginning of his dedicatory letter to the Republic of Geneva, that could be
traced to savage man's condition? To put it differently, what, if anything,
should a legislator learn from Rousseau's physical and metaphysical accounts of
savage man?
