AFTER FILM REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. Does Avatar
rely on a story/myth of the state of nature? How is it different/same than
Rousseau’s?
2. In Part II of the Discourse on the Origin and Foundation of Inequality, Rousseau lays
out four stages of inequality. What are these stages? Do the Na’Vi fit into one
(or more) of these stages? Where might the mining company fit in? What is lost
or gained in each of these stages?
- When
Rousseau describes the “final stage of inequality,” he states that we are
at “a new state of nature different from the one with which we began” p.
409? What does he mean by this?
What will happen at this stage? Are there any elements of Avatar that resonate with
Rousseau’s description of this final stage?
